Paraffin Ecolab - The Perfect Chemical Solution for Metal Polishing

Metal polishing is carried out to enhance the brightness and smoothness of the metal surface, helping to eliminate oxidation and surface imperfections.

What is metal polishing?

Polishing is a surface treatment process using a polishing pad (made from cotton fabric, specialty paper, cloth, leather, etc.) or applying a polishing compound directly onto the material's surface.

Metal polishing is performed to enhance the brightness and smoothness of the metal surface, helping to remove oxidation or imperfections that occur during machining, manufacturing, or crafting processes.

Some metal polishing methods

Tumbling polishing

Tumbling polishing is a technology applied for surface treatment before plating small components. The parts requiring polishing are placed in a specialized tumbling barrel along with abrasive media, water, and chemicals. The friction between the abrasive media and the components during the tumbling process helps reduce surface roughness.

The effectiveness of tumbling polishing depends on various factors such as the size, shape, and rotation speed of the barrel, the type of abrasive media, the properties of the solution, and the material and shape of the product. This method helps reduce surface roughness, serving as an alternative to grinding and manual polishing.

Vibratory Polishing

Vibratory polishing is a method developed based on rotary polishing. In this process, the workpieces and necessary materials are placed into a spring-like or bowl-shaped container. The vibrations—moving left, right, up, and down—create friction between the abrasive media and the workpieces. Vibratory polishing is suitable for both large and small components. The effectiveness of this method is primarily determined by the frequency and amplitude of the container's vibrations.

Chemical Polishing

Chemical polishing involves immersing the workpiece in an appropriate chemical solution, where a chemical reaction between the product and the solution enhances the surface's brightness. This method is effective for treating products with intricate details and yields high efficiency. However, the polished finish may not be long-lasting, and controlling the quality during the process can be challenging.

Electropolishing

Electropolishing is a process that polishes components at the anode in a specialized solution to treat surfaces before plating. When an electric current passes through, a high-resistance film forms on the metal surface. Protrusions and imperfections on the metal dissolve faster than concave areas due to higher current density, helping to eliminate minor scratches and smooth the surface. This method is commonly applied to polish stainless steel products, remove weld burns, deburr edges after turning, laser cutting, milling, plasma cutting, and reduce sharpness on cut edges.

Rough Polishing

Rough polishing is the initial stage in the metal polishing process, aimed at eliminating surface imperfections such as burrs, excess edges, and rough areas on metal products. For burr removal, machines like vibratory finishing machines or tumblers are used in conjunction with abrasive materials such as stones, stainless steel media, and specialized deburring solutions.

Additionally, to address rough surfaces and protruding edges, abrasive tools like sandpaper or coarse grinding wheels are employed. However, after rough polishing, the product is not yet ready for fine polishing; it must first undergo an intermediate polishing stage.

Intermediate Polishing

This step addresses scratches from rough polishing, ensuring a uniformly smooth surface before the final fine polishing stage using specialized cloths. Intermediate polishing primarily utilizes materials like felt or coconut fiber mounted on double-spindle machines for direct buffing. This step is often combined immediately after deburring, rarely separated into two distinct processes.

Fine Polishing

This is the final step to achieve a perfect shine on metal products. In this stage, soft cloth wheels combined with polishing compounds, waxes, or specialized chemicals are used to bring the metal surface to the desired luster.
